The
first Buddhist temple in China was built here in Sichuan Province in the 1st century A.D. in very
beautiful surroundings atop Mount Emei. The addition of other temples
turned the site into one of Buddhism's main holy places. Over the centuries,
the cultural treasures grew in number. The most remarkable was the Giant Buddha
of Leshan, carved out of a hillside in the 8th
century and looking down on the confluence of three rivers. At 71 m high, it
is the largest Buddha in the world. Mountain Emei
is also notable for its very diverse vegetation, ranging from subtropical to subalpine pine forests. Some of the trees are more than
1,000 years old.
·
Leshan - M t. Emei, 160 kilometers
away from Chengdu, is a very popular tourist area.
Leshan, called Jiazhou in
ancient times, lies at the confluence of three rivers - the Dadu, the Qingyi and the Min.
High up against the cliff stands the Leshan Giant
Buddha, a stone sculpture of 71 meters high, which is famous both in China
and in the world. The Dragon Boat Race there and the Folklore Tour at Wutongqiao held over recent years have become quite
popular among tourists.
·
Mt. Emei, known as Beauty under Heven, towering 3099 meters high with sheer precipices
and overhanging rocks, is covered with ancient trees and unusual plants. It
is famous as one of the four most famous Buddhist mountains
in China. Once onto the top - the golden
summit, you will enjoy a view of the Buddha's Halo; the sea of clouds and the
wonderful sunrise. A passenger cable car is planned to be set up for the
convenience of the aged and poorhealth pilgrims. Emeishan (Emei Mountain) lies 7 km. to the southwest of Emei county, Sichuan Province, and is one of the four famous Buddhist Mountains in China. Situated in the southwest of
the Sichuan Basin, and with a temperate climate, Emeishan is luxuriantly green all the year round, and
abounds in rainfalls, and rare and precious animals and plants. From the foot
of the mountain to its summit, the Peak of Ten Thousand Buddhas,
3133 metres above sea level, the trail totals some
60 kilometres in length. It is endowed with unique
changeable weather and marvelous natural beauty. Scenic spots and historic
sites are found all over the places.
